Acquisition of ISO 14001 Certification / Environmental Audit Sustainability
Acquisition of ISO 14001 Certification
At Kurabo, we carry out group-wide environmental management activities and have all our plants certified for ISO 14001 as we build environmental management systems. In this way, we can flexibly respond to the issues concerning environmental burden and environmental conservation that are unique to each site. The plants of Kurabo Industries' Textile Business Division, where an environmental management system has been fully developed, have made ISO 14001 self-declarations and operate their systems independently. Kurabo also recommends that its group companies in Japan and other countries acquire ISO 14001 certification.
Currently, five plants of Kurabo and eleven plants of its affiliates have obtained certification.

ISO 14001 Self-declaration
After acquiring certification for ISO 14001, the plants of Kurabo Industries' Textile Business Division (Anjo Mill and Tokushima Plant) operated their environmental management systems for about 10 years, during which time the systems became integral to business. Furthermore, because we judged that the management level had improved enough to be subject to independent operation, we have returned the certification of ISO 14001 to the certification organizations, and made an ISO 14001 self-declaration. In addition, with the establishment of the new ISO 14001 standard (2015 version), we have shifted to operating an environmental management system that complies with the new standard.
Taking the opportunity of this shift from ISO 14001 third-party certification to self-declaration, we are determined to work on further developing the management level and also improving profitability through an environmental management system integrated in the overall management of the company.
With an aim to ensure proper environmental management at business sites in Japan and overseas of the Kurabo Group, the head office staff conducts environmental audits by visiting each site on a regular basis. To improve the environmental management level, the audit not only checks observance of environment-related laws but also introduces recommended management methods.
As a result of environmental audits carried out on a continual basis, compliance with applicable laws and regulations has greatly improved. Since fiscal 2014, environmental audits have been conducted by shifting their focus from reviewing legal compliance to checking the operation of environmental management.
As a result of environmental audits in fiscal 2018, there were 53 items identified as needing improvement. These items were all improved by the end of the fiscal year. The entire Kurabo Group will strive to maintain and improve its environmental management system.

Internal ISO Environmental Audit
All three plants of Kurabo Industries' Textile Business Division have made an ISO 14001 self-declaration and are operating their environmental management systems independently. Therefore, in order to confirm that the management operation method conforms to ISO 14001 standards, the head office department overseeing environmental management conducts ISO environmental audits every year. An external institution also conducts reviews every few years in order to make an objective assessment of compliance.
In fiscal 2018, since all three plants shifted to operations based on the new ISO 14001 standard (2015 version), we conducted audits based on the new standard. Although minor issues were found, these were promptly corrected.
