Answerer

Mr.Tukuru Maruyama, Assistant manager of Technical department
We made an interview about issues before installation of PG-4 and its benefits with DEPO which has conducted many pavement inspections, concrete examination and asphalt mixing examination in Hokkaido with policy’ Fair and Strict examination'.

Issues before installation

  1. Long working hours
In conventional pavement inspection (Cracks, Ruts and smoothness) and transversal measurement, there was issue that long working hours on sites was heavy burden for staff in case of long measurement distance.
  2. Securing staff safety
We had to close lane for inspection in conventional methods (Cracks, Ruts and smoothness) including pavement inspection. In addition to this, there was concern of safety because we had to work on road in which many vehicles come and go.

Benefits

  1. Significant reduction of working hours
Regarding pavement inspection, we achieved to reduce working hours by around 56% because of mechanization to manual work. Even though there was abt. 2 km/day limitation as measurable distance, the distance was dramatically extended to abt. 560 km/day on expressway, abt. 280 km/day on local way after installing the vehicle inspection.
  2. Improvement of safety for staff
Various inspection can be measured by the vehicle, which resulted in reducing many staff on site and improving safety of staff.
  3. Improvement of data analysis
Regarding crack analysis, automatic analysis improved accuracy compared to conventional method with human eyes. Also, the system eased output for crack development view which shows crack distribution on roads. (JPG, CAD output)
In addition, MCI(*1) calculation integrating figure of cracks, ruts, smoothness and Ledger sheet output were made automatically on software. It brought us great work efficiency.

  4. Summary
Measurement with the vehicle reduced staff, working hours on sites and improved working environment for staff.
We used to measure several inspections at each method, however, now we are able to measure all at one time with using PG-4 and automatic calculation enabled us to analyze the measured data speedy. It contributes work efficiency significantly. Integrating these points, we could register with NETIS(*2) successfully. With improvement of software, we expect further efficiency.
